I was suspended from work for two days. There’s nothing quite like it, am I right?
I made a slightly large mistake this last week – something that brought down a large network. A core network switch stack was rebooted without properly vetting what was connected to it. This brought the network down for about 15 minutes (until the switches came back online).
The big problem here is that the network that was brought down was a touchy one – to the point that the client is threatening to pull service from our organization. To show them (and my coworkers) that this isn’t something they put up with, I was suspended from work for two days without pay.
As I am writing this, I’m finding it hard to believe I had done such a thing. I knew better – the switch stack connects the absolute core of this network. I ask that you do yourselves a favor: do your due diligence before rebooting network equipment. Especially if you could bring down an entire organization.
